Google Wallet Loyalty Card: How to Get Android Customers Into Your Programme

A Google Wallet loyalty card lets Android customers join your programme by scanning a QR code, with no app to install. It works alongside the Apple Wallet card. This guide shows how Android customers join, what they see and where the two wallets differ.

Serve Android and iPhone customers alike

  1. Design one card
  2. Use one script at the counter
  3. Plan messages both receive
  4. Treat geo-push as an extra

Both wallets, one list.

What is a Google Wallet loyalty card?

It is a digital loyalty card that lives in Google Wallet on an Android phone. A customer scans a QR code, taps to add the card, and it sits in their wallet beside their other cards and passes. Every stamp or point you add updates the card, and your messages appear on the lock screen.

MSTRMND issues the same card for Apple Wallet and for Google Wallet from one setup. You design it once, with your logo, colours and wording, and the customer’s phone decides which wallet it goes to. You do not run two programmes or keep two lists.

Why Android customers matter for your programme

A loyalty programme that works for only some of your regulars is a programme that quietly favours them. In a mixed customer base, the customers who cannot join are not unlucky, they are simply missed, and they are as likely to be among your best as any.

Android customers are not a niche. If your venue serves many kinds of people, you will have both iPhone and Android regulars at the counter on the same morning. The test of a card is whether a member of staff has to ask which phone someone has before they can offer it. They should not.

One setup issues both cards. Most of the experience is the same.

How an Android customer joins

The journey is short, which is the point.

  • They scan the QR code at your counter, on a poster or on a receipt with their phone’s camera.
  • They tap Add to Google Wallet on the page that opens.
  • The card appears in their wallet. It shows your branding and the current balance.
  • Your team scans it with the Scanner App on any phone when they pay.

There is no MSTRMND app to install and no password to remember. For an Android customer, that is one tap fewer than a typical loyalty app, and the card is always in a place they already open to pay.

Designing one card for two wallets

The card is the same programme in both wallets, so design for the one that is hardest to read. That means large text, high contrast and a short card name. Avoid fine print on the card face. Put the detail in the message you send when the customer joins.

Use the same wording at the counter whichever phone the customer has. “Scan this and add it to your wallet” works for both, and it saves staff from learning two scripts. If you need a longer explanation, keep it on the poster, not in the conversation.

Where Apple Wallet and Google Wallet differ

Most of the experience is the same: the card, the balance, the stamps or points and the lock-screen messages. One difference is worth knowing in advance. MSTRMND’s geo-push notifications, which appear when a customer’s phone is near your location, are listed for iPhone. Android customers get the card, the balance and the messages you send, but not the location trigger.

That is a reason to plan your messages around what both groups receive, and to treat geo-push as an extra for iPhone customers, not as the only way to reach people. If your venue has a high share of Android customers, lean on the messages you send yourself.

Three ways a venue serves Android customers well

The barber with a mixed clientele

A barber’s chair has both phones in it within a week. A single card with a single script, “scan this and add it to your wallet”, means no one is left out and no one is asked which phone they have. Our guide for barbershops covers the visit rhythm in more detail.

The café with a queue

Joining while waiting for a drink costs the counter nothing. An Android customer who scans, taps and puts the phone away has joined before the order is ready.

The salon with a long visit

A salon visit is long enough for a client to scan a poster and set up their card in the chair. Put the QR code where they are looking: on the mirror frame or the waiting area table.

What a Google Wallet loyalty card will not fix

Joining is only the first step. A card that nobody uses is a list, not a programme. What brings Android customers back is the same as for anyone: a reward within reach, a mention from your team and a message at a sensible moment. The wallet makes each of those easier. It does not do them for you.

Frequently asked questions

Do Android customers need an app for the loyalty card?

No. They scan a QR code, tap Add to Google Wallet and the card appears in the wallet already on their phone. There is no MSTRMND app and no password. Your team scans the card with the Scanner App on any phone. The experience is the same on the front end as for an iPhone customer.

Do I need two separate programmes for Apple and Google?

No. You design one card in MSTRMND and the customer’s phone decides whether it goes to Apple Wallet or Google Wallet. You keep one customer list and one reward rule, so there is nothing to reconcile between the two. That also means you can compare behaviour without splitting it by phone.

Do Android customers get geo-push notifications?

Geo-push, the message that appears when a customer is near your location, is listed for iPhone. Android customers still receive the card, balance updates and the messages you send. If many of your regulars use Android, plan your messaging around what both groups receive and treat geo-push as an extra.

Which plan do I need for Google Wallet cards?

Every plan issues both wallet cards. Starter, at £31 a month billed annually, covers one location with one stamp card and up to 100 clients. Grow adds three card types, up to 1,000 clients and five locations. The wallet is the same on all of them.
