Geo-Push Notifications: Reach Regulars When They Are Near Your Door

Geo-push notifications are wallet card messages that appear when a customer’s iPhone is near one of your locations. MSTRMND offers them on Grow and Business, within a 100 metre radius. This guide covers how they work, what to send and what they cannot do.

Use geo-push well

  1. Check the plan: Grow or Business
  2. Plan for iPhone only
  3. Write for a second on the lock screen
  4. Vary the message

Treat it as a bonus.

What are geo-push notifications?

A geo-push notification is a message on a customer’s lock screen that appears because they are close to your business. The card in their Apple Wallet carries your location. When the phone is within range, the message you set shows up. The customer did not open an app or search for you. They were walking past, and your card spoke at the right moment.

On MSTRMND, geo-push is part of the Grow plan at all 5 locations and the Business plan at all 10. The radius is 100 metres and the feature is for iPhone. Starter does not include it. Those three facts decide where it fits.

Why location is a strong trigger

Most marketing asks a customer to think about you at a time you choose. A location message arrives when they are already close, which is the moment a decision is easiest to change. A regular who was heading to a competitor, or home, can be reminded that a reward is waiting a hundred metres away.

It is also the least intrusive kind of message, when it is done well. A message that says something useful at the right place feels like a service. The same message sent at three in the afternoon from across town feels like an advert. The location is what makes it relevant.

Geo-push by plan

Geo-push is a Grow and Business feature. The radius and phone are the same on both.

How it works for the customer

From the customer’s side, nothing complicated happens.

  • They add the card to Apple Wallet from a QR code on their first visit.
  • They go about their day. The card carries your location.
  • They come within range, about 100 metres, and the message appears on their lock screen.
  • They tap it, or they ignore it. Either way, no app was involved.

What the customer sees depends on the phone’s own settings, including its location permissions. A customer who has switched off location features will not see the message, which is their choice and a reason not to rely on this alone.

What to say when someone is nearby

The message has to earn its place on a lock screen, and it has about a second to do it.

The café at the corner

A message at the start of the working day, “Your usual is two minutes away, and your next stamp is a free coffee”, reaches the commuter at exactly the right time.

The restaurant before dinner

A customer near the restaurant in the early evening might act on a reminder of a table or a reward. Keep it specific and short.

The barber on a quiet day

A bonus stamp for anyone who walks in today, shown to customers who are nearby, gives a quiet Tuesday a reason to fill. See our guide for barbershops on filling the slow days.

The limits to plan around

It is for iPhone. Android customers receive the card and your other messages, but not the location trigger. If many of your regulars use Android, geo-push is an extra, not the main channel.

The range is 100 metres. That suits a busy street or a shopping parade. It is a poor fit for a venue in a quiet area where few people pass by, and for a venue on a motorway or an out-of-town road.

It is not Starter. Geo-push is on Grow and Business. If you only have one location and a short list, a wallet notification you send yourself does the job for less.

It depends on the phone’s settings. A customer can turn off location features, so treat the message as a bonus, not a guarantee.

Keeping it welcome

The rule is the same as for any message: if you cannot say why it is worth a lock screen, do not send it. A location message that fires every day for the same customer, passing the same door, becomes background noise. Make it change with the day, the reward or the stage of the card. A customer who is one stamp from a reward deserves a different message from one who has just joined.

Frequently asked questions

How close does a customer have to be for a geo-push message?

The radius is 100 metres around each location, on Grow and Business. It applies to iPhone customers who have added your card to Apple Wallet. A busy street or a shopping parade suits that range, and a quiet area with little foot traffic does not. Phone location settings also affect whether a message shows.

Do Android customers get geo-push notifications?

Geo-push is listed for iPhone. Android customers still receive the card, balance updates and every message you send yourself, so they are not left out of the programme. If many of your regulars use Android, plan your messaging so that geo-push is an extra, not the main way you reach people.

Which plan includes geo-push?

Grow and Business. Grow, at £69 a month billed annually, covers all 5 locations, and Business, at £115 a month billed annually, covers all 10. Starter does not include geo-push. On Starter you can still send wallet notifications yourself, and they are unlimited.

Will it annoy my customers?

Not if each message has a reason. A message that changes with the stage of the card, such as being one stamp from a reward, feels useful. The same message every day, to the same customer walking past the same door, becomes background noise. Vary what you say, and keep it short enough to read without opening it.
